Because markets are efficient it is hard to impossible pick stocks to get ahead of indexes over long term. Luckily you have better choices.

Here are two strategies for higher consistent returns and less risk. These are also opportunities for index beating returns. And high absolute returns which can reach 30% and above if you use margin and have or gain experience.

You can have high absolute returns with a lot of stability by buying bond and stock closed end funds with discount.

Closed end fund is like mutual fund. The difference is that closed end fund have limited number of shares. And they can sell for less or more than sum of underlying securities. Buy fixed income closed end funds with discount. You can go to etfconnect.com and search by discount. The more advanced strategy is to frequently trade the closed end funds and hedge them with options on Treasuries ETFs. This government bond exchange traded funds have ticker symbols TLT, IEF and SHY. Frequent trading can capture short-term fluctuations and significantly improve overall results. If you trade, you might pay attention to shorter duration funds – not just to discount. Closed end funds with average maturates up to 5 years are more predictable from my experience and therefore easier to trade.

Second opportunity is about selling stock puts. You act as mini insurance company by selling insurance (puts) that stock will not be 20-30% lower 0.5 – 2.5 years from the initial transaction. Select the put expiration date as far as possible. Stocks with LEAPS – options expiring up to 2.5 years in the future are preferable.

Approach picking stocks for selling puts like you buy a business or invest for very long term. I consider this strategy as investing – not trading. At least from underlying stock selection perspective. Pick companies you, independent financial publications and/or trusted advisors made a lot of research. Look for cash, real estate on balance sheet. Very important is long-term predictable growth (growth even better then hypergrowth, because it is hard to predict when hypergrowth phase stops). One of the most important factors is management. Best picks may and should include companies run or owned by best managers or money managers. I mean Sears Holdings (SHLD) which is run by billionaire hedge fund manager Eddie Lampert. Eddie Lampert is one of the best and highly respected money mangers in USA. Some people call him modern Warren Buffett. He took about 5 managerial responsibilities at Sears Holdings. And besides being one of the very best money managers he is famous for successful retail turnaround stories.

Second example for stock selection is Hewlett Packard with Mark Hurd as CEO. Look at the outstanding job Mark Hurd did at his previous company – NCR Corp.

Of course one of the most important things is to buy companies with good valuation. Don’t chase good stories, good products, good prospects and even brilliant managers without regard for stock valuation.

With experience you can add turnaround stories to you portfolio, but make sure to thoroughly researching this opportunities. You can sell much more expensive insurance (expensive puts) in this situations.

By employing this two strategies outlined above you can create balanced portfolio with exposure to stocks and fixed income. Both strategies results to buying securities with discount. With selling puts you also have benefit of leverage because you need to put up in margin 10%-20% of underlying securities.

I feel that both strategies might be part of any size portfolio and might be suitable for investors with lower than average risk tolerance.

Recently, almost no options trading seminar is without some mention or introduction to technical analysis. In fact, almost all of the options trading blogs out there in the internet use technical analysis as their main basis of decision making. Why is that so? Why is options trading so closely related to technical analysis now?
In order to understand the important relationship between technical analysis and options trading, we need to first understand what technical analysis does in the first place.
There are two main methods of analysis; Fundamental Analysis and Technical Analysis.
Fundamental analysis is the reading of fundamental data of a company or economy in order to predict and invest in the future performance of the company or market. Such fundamental data includes profit and loss statements, earnings growth and earnings guidance. The problem with fundamental analysis is that great companies do not always make great stocks. Stocks of great companies also experience periods of downturn, often for extended periods of time. As such fundamental analysis helps an investor mostly in deciding what stocks to buy for the long term (5 to 10 years out), if nothing unpredictable happens to the company in the years down the road. In fact, fundamental analysis is a tool favorable by investors who buy stocks for their dividends and dividend growth.
Technical analysis is the studying of market data of a stock. Yes, while Fundamental Analysis is the study of a company, technical analysis studies its stock exclusively. Such market data includes the price across different time periods and volume transacted. From price and volume, options traders see how the price of a stock is doing no matter what the company data is doing. This helps traders and investors avoid those extended periods of downturn even though a company’s fundamental data looks great. Indeed, while fundamental analysis tells an investor which company is doing well, technical analysis tells an investor when it is time to buy or sell its stocks. Indeed, the strength of technical analysis is in its ability to guide the buying and selling decisions of investors across short time periods through price patterns and price trends.
So, why is technical analysis such a favorite in options trading?
Lets recall that fundamental analysis is favorable for long term investing and technical analysis is favorable for use even in short time periods. Stock traders can hold stocks forever but options expire after a fixed time! Yes, options typically last no more than a year and options traders frequently use options trading strategies that require extremely short outlooks in terms of months or weeks. This is exactly why technical analysis is so closely associated with options trading. Options traders simply do not have the luxury to hold a position for years like stock traders do. On top of that, options traders do not receive dividends like stock investors do. The only way to make money in options trading is for the expected outlook to play out within the expiration period of the options. This makes the fundamental strength of the company it is based on relatively unimportant. On top of that, options traders are able to profit when stocks drop as well. This also makes identifying good companies through fundamental analysis relatively unimportant.
Indeed, reading price trends and price patterns that might show the direction a stock is moving the next week or month has more value to options trading than reading a company profit and loss statement that does not tell you where its stock may be going for the short term at all.
I hope my short article explains why technical analysis and options trading are so closely related and that it will help you better understand the big lack of fundamental analysis whenever the subject of options trading is raised.

Investors as well as traders, are greatly interested in the stock market. It has revealed itself as the best platform to help one’s capital grow, provided the person is in tune with current market trends and knows where to put his/her money. The popularity of this method has prompted people from the trading community to go in for an efficient stock trading system.

Another reason for the demand to have a good stock trading system in place is the rise in global stock markets. As a matter of fact, traders/brokers as well as investors/shareholders are finding that the task of trading in equities or shares or stocks is proving to be extremely complicated, considering that newer companies and institutions are being launched all the time. And the Internet has not helped by bringing the world closer to home!

What are the features of a stock trading system?

(1) What is meant by a stock trading system? It is a tool to enhance the success of investments, especially if it works effectively and efficiently. It includes strategies related to investments, market guides and trading schemes.

There are experienced analysts and professionals to guide the trader or investor as needed. This is achieved by providing a constant flow of information and analysis regarding market trends and movements in the stock market arena. Without this in place, it would be difficult for smooth functioning of the stock market.

Lastly, there is a timing system included in the package. Thus, every investor is aware of the time limits for investing in a particular stock.

(2) A stock trading system is not something that can be just bought at any marketplace! There are special individual distributors or operators available–they can be found locally too. These dealers offer a customer much more than just a system. They are truly worth it because they can lessen your headaches! All the more better to go to them if you have linked up with other business partners.

(3) Another option is to check out those special companies offering to sell systems that are dependable and have already been well promoted.

(4) Traditional or conventional methods of transactions are giving way to more modern methods. So there is the automatic/electronic stock trading system which is faster and more interactive in nature.

Since trading in stocks has become a global activity, it is difficult for investors to be present physically at all locations. He/she need not attend auction venues or trading places for the express purpose of buying or selling shares or trading stocks. Hence, the launch of electronic transactions.

This sort of a stock trading system is quick and convenient since it is supported by wireless Internet and wireless telephone. More advanced technology is sure to evolve in future.

Trading strategies are important and therefore a comprehensive marketing analysis is must. The analysis part is very important, and with the advancement of the technology, the analysis process has become easier than ever before. There are advanced analysis tools available online – simply feed some required data and find the analysis results in no time.

There are several things like charts, and stock quotes that are very essential to learn. Once you learn all these fundaments – trading would definitely be simple and hassle free.

For first time investors, it is important for them to find the answers to their innumerable questions. Some investors might ask: do I need an online account, how to buy and sell stocks, how to choose the stock company website, who can help them in case they have some doubts to clear? There are several other related questions that might strike in one’s mind. And you can find all the answers on the web.

Commodity markets have been around for a long time. Commodity trading started in the U.S. in 1848 at the Chicago Board Of Trade, the world’s first official futures exchange. The purpose of the futures exchange is to provide industries with a valuable cost management tool. It allows producers and the like, to know in advance their approximate cost of doing business. A farmer can sell corn to a speculator on the futures exchange at a decent price, months before his crop is due. This transfers the risk of a big price movement to the speculator. The farmer is hedging against a big price drop which would really hurt his bottom line. Speculation is an honorable profession and a key element to our overall economy.

There are a wide range of futures contracts that can be traded. Everything from grains such as corn, wheat and soybeans to currencies such as the U.S Dollar and British Pound. For a complete list, check out a futures exchange or futures brokerage website. With some futures you can trade minis. Options are also traded.

The reason fortunes can be made, sometimes rather quickly, in the futures market is because of the leverage involved. As an example, you will control 5000 bushels of corn by acquiring one futures contract of corn. Every 1 cent that corn moves is worth 50 dollars. If you were long 1 contract of corn at 3.00 per bushel and the price moved up to 3.10, your profit would be 500 dollars.

It’s a double edged sword when you are dealing with this much leverage. It’s absolutely essential you implement sound money management and cut all losses short. You could get wiped out fast if you don’t. The futures market tends to move much faster than the stock market. Add all the leverage involved, this is the major leagues when it comes to trading. Fortunes are made and lost every day in the futures market. To trade in the futures market you need to get an account with a futures brokerage. Then you must put up margin before you can trade. The margin varies a lot depending on what you trade.

I didn’t call the futures market, the major leagues of trading for nothing. Over 90% of traders lose in this market. Two of the main reasons they lose are lack of proper trading knowledge and inadequate money management. I can’t possibly cover everything to do with the futures market and trading it in one article. I will touch on a few successful strategies, methods and techniques. It takes years of proper trading education and experience to become a top trader. I will cover more in future articles.

You need to have at least a basic understanding of technical analysis. Technical analysis is the study of market action primarily through the use of charts. It’s based on 3 premises. Market action discounts everything, prices move in trends and history repeats itself. Newton’s first law of motion states, a trend in motion is more likely to continue than to reverse. This is also true in the marketplace. Chart patterns are based on human psychology. Human nature or psychology never changes. That’s why there are recurring chart patterns which a good technician will take advantage of. The future is a repetition of the past when it comes to the markets.

Here is an example of a basic, yet sound strategy. First, always trade with the major trend. Which direction has the market been moving the last several months to a year or so? Use a weekly chart to find the major trend. If the trend in up, you should only trade from the long side. If the major trend is down, only trade from the short side. You can trade breakouts from a consolidation within the major trend. If gold traded between 800 and 830 dollars per ounce for a couple months, you would go long on a close above 830 if the major trend is up. Go short on a close below 800 if the major trend is down. It’s always best to trade in the direction of the major trend. Other important factors such as seasonal tendencies and analysis of the cash basis should also be implemented into your overall trading plan. Money management is the secret to successful trading. Always cut all losses short. You can use support or resistance levels to place a strategic sell stop. Another method is to place a sell stop below a major trend line if you are long or above a major trend line if you are short.

This is only the tip of the iceberg of what it takes to become an elite trader that consistently makes profits in the marketplace. This is true whether you trade stocks, futures, exchange traded funds or options. You now have a general idea of how the futures market works and some of the strategies and methods used world’s best traders and investors to amass fortunes. I will be writing future articles that deal with specific strategies, methods, techniques and principles used by the world’s best traders and investors, past and present.

Forex is the biggest market in the world in terms of the amount of money transacted. There are several huge players in the market. These are knowledgeable professionals who trade in these markets for various financial institutions, hedge funds, brokerages etc. If you, as an individual trader, want to profit from trading in the market, then you have to know the various strategies the traders use to trade in the market.
You can learn all these strategies either by learning the various steps yourself or by joining a training course. If you decide to learn on your own, then you may require some time before you get the hang of using them or before you formulate some strategies of your own. If you decide to join a training course, then you can learn all the strategies from an experienced trader and learn to use these strategies in the market during the course itself.
There are several training institutes out there who have associated themselves with the best forex dealers in the market currently. These institutes bring you up to speed with all the latest tools being used in the market these days. They will help you evolve your own trading strategies that you can use to make profits in the market. Some of the institutes also allow you to trade on some of the best platforms with the best traders that these institutes have associated themselves with. The institutes help you in learning the fundamentals of devising your own strategy. They will teach all the basic terms and definitions and update you with the latest developments in technical analysis. They stress on risk management as this is one of the most fundamental factors of forex trading.
Different levels of courses are offered by these institutes. Most of the courses are aimed at the novice trader where they teach you all the basic concept and strategies. In the advanced courses, complex strategies are discussed and its use is practised. They will also teach you various risk management strategies and money management techniques. They build the psychological edge you need to succeed while trading in the forex market. They also have courses aimed at the various corporate who want to protect their exposure to the foreign currency by building positions in the market that hedges their various foreign currency exposures.
These institutes also offer you the choice of learning through the internet which are also known as virtual classrooms or through various physical classrooms. You can choose any of the above options depending upon the one which will suit you the most. If you feel like you need one-to-one coaching and help while trading in the markets then the physical classroom is the choice to make. Another advantage of choosing physical classroom is the amount of networking that you can do while attending the course. This will stand in good stead as you will be able to discuss any future trades with these people.
Forex training is really useful and any opportunity to attend such a training course should not be wasted.

Most people will tell you that day trading stock options is extremely risky and shouldn’t be attempted by new traders. And they are right, to an extent. Trading options can be risky even for professional traders with 20 years experience.

However, trading stock options can be a great way to leverage your investment. For a small fee, with a defined risk, you can control a large amount of stock. The primary thing to remember, options are a wasting asset. When expiration Friday arrives, the option expires. If the option is in the money, you can either use it purchase the stock or redeem the option for the premium value. If the option expires out of the money, you have lost your investment.

Most people try to guess which direction the market is going to move, will it go up or will it go down. If they guess wrong, they lose money. More people trade with call options instead of put options, because they understand going long on the market but do not understand going short.

The vast majority of traders do not utilize trading strategies such as straddles or strangles, much less condors or butterflies. As a result, they are taking on a lot more risk, with less chance of making a profit.

If the beginning trader would take the time to learn some of the various trading strategies, they would greatly decrease their risk and improve the odds of having winning trades tremendously.

Learning the complex option trading strategies is not that hard. First you learn about the simple puts and calls options. When you understand the basic building blocks, you move on to combining the various strike prices and expiration dates. Even the most complex stock option trading strategy is made up of simple puts and calls.

These strategies will reduce the risk to a much lower level. The down side to these trades is you lower the return on the trade. But if the trade goes bad, the strategy will minimize your loss. If you still have money, you can still keep trading. If you lose all of your capital, you are out of the game.

So the people that say day trading stock options is risky are correct. But if you take these simple steps, then you can lower the risk, and still maintain the leverage that trading options will provide.

Real time stock options trading isn’t for everyone, as you’ll literally need to be able to monitor the markets in real time. If you can do that though, it can be one of the most profitable methods of trading as you can respond instantly to the price fluctuations through the day. Read on for our 4 hot tips on real time stock options trading.

Tip 1

The most fundamental thing for real time stock options trading is that you actually have some kind of real time link to the markets. There are hundreds of websites out there that claim real time reporting, but you’ll find most of them actually updated every fifteen minutes – still useful, but not exactly real time. If you are serious about trading, consider buying some pro software than can keep you plugged in all the time, and literally update you in real time.

Tip 2

Set yourself some profit goals and some stop losses. There is no point being able to track things in real time unless you have some real objectives. In real time, stock options trading can be very very profitable because it’s one of the only forms of trading where you can profit if the price rises and if it falls too, depending on which kind of option you hold. Always plan your get out price in advance, and never ever waver from it.

Tip 3

Even if you are aren’t trading with anything yet, get used to tracking the data and seeing how certain stock prices perform. Real time stock options trading can be a little trickier to learn, because of all the minute fluctuations in price from one moment to the next. The more tracking you do, and the more data you record, the easier it will be for you to tell the fluctuations from the real price changes.

Tip 4

Find a broker service with low commission. If you do get involved with real time stock options trading, you’ll find that having a broker taking a large slice of commission each trade can really cut into your profits – and sometimes make them unprofitable altogether! If you are doing real time trading, chances are you’ll make more trades than average, so it makes sense to pay less doesn’t it?

These 4 tips should at least give you a starting point with real time stock options trading. Click the links below to find out how your own automated software can boost your profit.

When it comes to option trading, the most important lesson to retain is an understanding of what’s actually being traded. The real commodity in any option trading strategy isn’t the underlying stock itself, and it has little to do directly with phrases such as implied volatility, net debit, net credit, strike price, or expiration date. Fundamentally, what’s really being traded when an option transaction is enacted are degrees of risk.

Option trading, in and of itself, is not inherently risky. Options are simply tools. Imagine a big dial labeled, Options. You turn the dial one way and your risk goes down (as do your potential rewards). You turn the dial the other way and your risk goes up (as do your rewards, either in the form of upfront cash, or in the form of potential profits). In short, you can use options (for the right price) to reduce your risk, and you can use options (if the price is right) to generate lucrative income or receive other compensation in exchange for taking on someone else’s risk.

Let’s look at some scenarios that show each side of the risk trade.

Using Options to Reduce Risk

There are various option trading strategies you can employ to reduce the risk to your stock holdings. The price you will have to pay may come in the form of an actual cash payout to purchase that protection, or it may involve exchanging some of your future potential profits in order to acquire that protection.

Here are two trades that will reduce your risk:

Using Options to be Compensated for Assuming Someone Else’s Risk

If you are willing to assume someone else’s risk you can be compensated–and sometimes quite handsomely–for your trouble. The compensation may take the form of sharing the capital gains on someone else’s stock, or it may simply take the form of a cash payment.

Here are two types of trades in which you are compensated to assume someone else’s risk:

Conclusion:

The option trade examples above are all relatively simple but they illustrate the true nature of stock options. Trafficking in options is essentially trafficking in risk. No matter how elaborate and complex an option trade becomes, the core equation of risk is still present.

Developing and maintaining an awareness of this reality of options is crucial to your own option trading success. Whether you’re looking to reduce your risk or to be compensated for assuming someone else’s, a conscious awareness of what’s really happening in any given options transaction is invaluable. Once you know what’s really at stake, you’re in a much better position to consciously look for ways to accomplish your objectives as efficiently as possible. The outsourcer of risk will seek to reduce risk as cheaply as possible, and the assumer of risk will seek the highest compensation for the risk assumed.

The first thing that you have to know before trading in stock option is that stock options are not stocks, and just because you trade in stock that does not license you to trade in stock option by default. When you are planning to trade in stock option, you should find out as much as possible about the stock option. Search the internet and get all the possible information that you can get on that topic.

Only being aware of what you think about the option is not enough, it is prudent to know what others think about the option also. You should talk to people who trade in stock options, read books on that topic and do everything possible to keep your self abreast of all that is related to stock options. Doing this should fairly give you an idea of trading in stock option, to get some practical experience; you could also try “trading on paper”

There is no ground rule to choose the winner stock, you have to do an extensive research on your prospective company and then decide whether it is worth while to invest.

The basic things that you ought to check in the company are; 1. Company’s track record; it is important that you look at the performance of the company in the past few years. 2. Check the price of its stock and its volatility; more often than not after a technical analysis of the stock price you will be able to speculate its price movement. 3. Keep an eye on any current news such as stock split, mergers or accusations or any other investment that the company may be going in to.

In option trading, you can make money either ways. If you expect the stock price to rise, you should buy a call option. A call option is a right that the option holder enjoys, to buy the stocks of the specified company at a specified price. This specified price is called the exercise price. Now, if you buy a call option you will gain if the stock price rises, because you have the right to buy the stock at the exercise price at the expiration of the option. This way you can acquire the stock at a lower cost and sell it in the open market at the market price, there by booking profit. You can also sell the call option if you are expecting the stock price to fall. In this case there is one catch; you are exposed to unlimited loss and limited gain. Your gain is the premium amount that will be paid to you by the buyer of the option, on the other hand if the stock prices rises instead of falling then you will have to buy the stock at a higher price from the market and sell it at the lower exercise price, to the buyer of the call option. This is a naked or an uncovered call option. You can hedge yourself by purchasing a call option with a lower exercise price and a longer maturity. Similarly when you buy a put you are expecting the price to fall and when you sell a put you are expecting the prices to rise.

If you trade correctly and maintain the right balance of risks you can surely emerge a winner in stock option trading.
